Parabens in Skincare

Why We Choose to Say No

When we spoke in our post Your Skin, Your Way, we explored the importance of trusting ourselves, our intuition, and the ingredients we choose to put on our skin.

Today, I want to continue that journey by looking a little closer at one of the most debated families of cosmetic ingredients: parabens.

What Are Parabens?

Parabens are synthetic preservatives that have been used in skincare and cosmetics for decades. Their role is to prevent products from being spoiled by bacteria and mould, and to extend their shelf life.

On a label, you’ll usually recognise them as Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, or Ethylparaben.

Why Are They Controversial?

Concerns about parabens come from their ability to act as endocrine disruptors. This means they can mimic hormones in the body, potentially disturbing our natural hormonal balance.

Some studies have detected traces of parabens in breast tumour tissue. While the scientific community continues to debate the direct link, the possibility has been enough to raise questions about their long-term safety.

It’s not about fear, but about awareness. When it comes to our health and wellbeing, even small daily exposures matter. A recent systematic review published in Science of The Total Environment (2024) highlights ongoing concerns around parabens: "Parabens are globally employed as important preservatives in pharmaceutical, food, and personal care products. Nonetheless, improper disposal of commercial products comprising parabens can potentially contaminate various environmental components, including the soil and water. Residues of parabens have been detected in surface water, ground water, packaged food materials, and other consumer items. Long-term exposure to parabens through numerous consumer products and contaminated water can harm human health."

Our Philosophy at Beauty by Nature

At Beauty by Nature, our decision is clear: we choose to avoid parabens altogether.

Not because we want to spread fear, but because we believe that uncertainty is reason enough to choose differently. For us, skincare is not just about short-term results, it’s about long-term wellbeing.

We prefer formulas that are honest and transparent, with fewer additives and more of what truly matters—nutrient-rich, natural ingredients that care for your skin and respect its balance.

Your Skin, Your Choice

Your Skin, Your Way isn’t just a phrase. It’s a philosophy. By learning more about the ingredients in the products we use every day, we empower ourselves to make choices that feel right.

And when it comes to parabens, our choice is simple: we say no.
